Lecture
Oskar Schmerling and the World of Caricatures in (multi-ethnic and multi-religious) Tbilisi at the Beginning of the 20th Century
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Caucasus was intensively involved in the process of globalization due to its rare resources such as oil and manganese ore.
A cultural expression of this involvement in global processes was reflected in the print media. Using the example of the caricatures of the Tbilisi German Oskar Schmerling, the lecture will present the entanglements and exchange processes of this first globalization in the urban center of Tbilisi (Tiflis) on the periphery of the Tsarist Empire in various ethnic communities and discuss the specifics of interethnic exchange.
