Gerhard Höpp Collection
Gerhard Höpp (1942–2003) was a historian, Arabist, and Islamic scholar who began his studies in 1962 at what was then the Karl Marx University of Leipzig and graduated with a diploma. Beginning in 1966, he worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Leipzig. Höpp received his doctorate in 1972. After a stay in Aden, South Yemen, he began working in 1973 as a translator for the General German News Service of the GDR in Iraq and Syria. In 1975, he became a research associate at the Central Institute for History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW). In 1986, he completed his habilitation and, at the same time, assumed leadership of the Department of History of Developing Countries at the newly founded AdW Institute for World History. In 1988, Höpp was appointed professor. When the Modern Orient Research Focus was established in 1992—which evolved into the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in 1996—Höpp became its research associate and coordinator. He remained at the ZMO until his death in 2003, bequeathing his scholarly estate to the institution.
In addition to the books that have been added to the library, this estate includes approximately 145 archive boxes containing research materials, primarily on the topics of “Arabs and National Socialism,” “Essad Bey,” “World War II experiences,” “Muslims in Germany,” and “Islamic Studies/Oriental Studies in the GDR,” as well as microforms in the ZMO’s microform collection.
The collection is largely digitized and can be accessed upon request; any non-digitized parts have been excluded from digitization due to legal and data protection reasons (GDPR).
