“Shoot that Elephant”: Anthropology of Inter-Species Entanglements in Kerala, South India
Drawing from twenty-four months of ethnographic fieldwork in forest-frontier villages of Kerala, my project asks how initiatives aimed at promoting equality among humans deepen tensions between humans and non-humans. Second, it asks how an event of human-wildlife conflict becomes imprinted in people’s everyday lives. This project locates the formation of multispecies entanglements through agrarian transition, modernity, and state-making.
