Conflict-Induced Migration from Turkey: Youth Radicalisation and Highly Qualified Immigrants

Veranstaltung wird auf Englischer Sprache abgehalten.

Turkish migration to Western Europe, particularly Germany, has historically been driven by both economic aspirations and socio-political conflicts. Since 2013, a new wave of highly skilled young Turks has migrated, also largely due to political instability. More recently, there is another emerging and concerning trend that may further accelerate migration to Europe: the co-radicalisation of young Turks and refugees in Turkey’s marginalised urban areas. Since 2019, escalating tensions between Turkish citizens and refugees have created an increasingly hostile social environment. Radicalisation, often a reaction to governance failures and socio-economic grievances, intersects with co-radicalisation—a process in which distinct social groups, despite limited direct interaction, develop mutual hostility. In Turkey, this dynamic is amplified by political actors, including the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and opposition parties like the Victory Party (Zafer Partisi), who exploit socio-economic, cultural, and religious divisions for political gain. Based on the findings of my empirical research over the last decade, this talk will shed light on the current forms of co-radicalisation between young people with “native” and migrant backgrounds in Turkey who are both suffering from socio-economic, legal, and political impediments.
