Dr. Harald Vocke estate

During his studies, Harald Vocke had already learned the classical Arabic language during a stay in Egypt. He later worked for the German Foreign Office in Baghdad, Damascus, Kuala Lumpur, Jeddah and other places. In 1963, he joined the editorial staff of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), for which he worked as Middle East correspondent in Beirut for the next six years. Following his professional activity, he dealt with Yemeni poetry and wrote a biography on the diplomat Albrecht von Kessel.

After Dr. Harald Vocke died in February 2007, his wife bequeathed his journalistic works as well as his Arabic specialist literature on the modern Orient (original Arabic sources on contemporary history, especially from the third quarter of the last century, as well as important standard works of Oriental studies) to the ZMO. About 20 shelf meters of files and books are involved. His own articles date from the late 1950s to the early 1990s. They appeared mainly in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, but also in Die Welt, Rheinischer Merkur, Würzburger Tagespost and other newspapers and magazines. They deal with the Yemen war, which he followed from Beirut and on the ground, the Lebanon and Palestine conflict, the first oil crisis, the situation of Christians in today's Orient and other contemporary historical problems. The other files contain mainly research material on "Yemeni poetry", "Albrecht von Kessel" and "Lebanese Civil War".

The arrangement of the bequest in the stacks of the library of the ZMO corresponds to the arrangement according to the subject areas mentioned below. Even though the material has not yet been cataloged, it is available for research by subject area. However, for reasons of protection of still living persons, only the folders with journalistic works published by Dr. Vocke are currently accessible to the public. If there is an urgent scientific interest in the use of other documents, we ask for a written request with justification.
