ZMO's main research programme is entitled Thinking through Translocal Entanglements: Perspectives from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. It investigates historical and present socio-economical dynamics and cultural developments from the 16th century to the present from the perspective of Muslim regions and societies. It is envisaged to last five years with a probable second phase.
ZMO's researchers cooperate closely across the four research units and across all disciplines represented at the centre. Research results and cross-cutting questions are thus brought together and discussed in joint projects, publications or events.
