Minorities and the Politics of Language

The Birmingham-Berlin Talks are a collaborative effort between Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin and the Centre for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies (CREES) in Birmingham, United Kingdom. 

We will be holding 3 online events over the next 3 months – in April, May and June. They will be organised as ‘brown bag lunch’ sessions, so please feel free to bring your lunch when joining us!

  • Dr Vlada Baranova (ZMO) Grassroots Activism Meets Decoloniality: Ethnic Minorities and Language Advocacy in the Russian Federation
  • Dr Natalia Kogut (CREES) The Politics of Language and Memory in Ukraine. 
  • Dr Natasha Rulyova (CREES) Linguistic Diversity in Dagestan, Tatarstan and Central Asia in Works by Contemporary Authors
